Social Movement and Gender Integration

Aiman Farrukh

Abstract

Participation in social movements is a multifaceted phenomenon. These movements aspire to change not only specific policies, but also broad cultural and institutional structures that have effects far beyond their explicitly articulated goals. Women's movement provides a good example of how emergent norms and collective outlooks can influence mobilization and public opinion. Such collective behavior not only challenges gender inequalities but also mobilize women as a particular constituency to work for and against a variety of other changes in the political and economic status quo. This study aims to put this literature under test and determine whether participation of women in social movement lead to gender integration and empowerment. Taking the Anjuman Mazareen Punjab Movement as the intervention, the impact of female participation will be determined in the post intervention period. With the use of Labor Force Survey, six pre intervention and ten post intervention periods will be taken. I will use Triple Difference in Difference strategy with three comparison groups: women (both rural and urban areas) and men only in rural areas. Moreover, due to variation in the amount of land used in each district by the people involved in the movement, the study aims to generates difference in difference estimates under non-homogenous treatment intensity. The contribution of my thesis is in terms of identification of another channel that could result in women empowerment and integration
