Second International Conference on Applied Development Economics - Day 2


Dr. Adnan Khan, Professor, London School of Economics (LSE), School of Public Policy, opened the second day of the Conference with
the plenary address on "The unintended effect of corruption control" applying a special focus on the possible detriments caused by
inefficient or overkill of corruption control.


First session of the Second International Conference on Applied Development Economics was on Political Economy, Governance and
Institutional Capacity'.
Dr. Waqar Wadho, Lahore School of Economics, presented on "Measuring and limiting corruption in the Pakistani bureaucracy: Evidence
from list and endorsement experiments with high ranked bureaucrats". The research discussed several experiments involving high
ranking bureaucrats to observe the success of anti-corruption strategies.


Verena Wiedemann, University of Oxford, presented on "Who is paying the price? The response of consumer prices to political disruptions
in Ethiopia and Pakistan".


Saher Asad, Lahore University of Management Sciences, presented on "Promotion incentives for improved service delivery”.


Simon Quinn, University of Oxford, presented on motivated Ethiopian youth, assigned to management experience using algorithms to
match individuals & firms. Zero avg. effect on self-employment but striking heterogeneity highlighting role of matching algorithms in
intervention design.


Muhammad Meki, University of Oxford, presented on "Microequity for microenterprises: Evidence from artefactualfield experiment and survey".


John Morrow, Kings College London, presented on comparative advantage of firms: using the removal of size-based entry barriers in input
markets in India to show firms more likely to enter industries that were similar in input use to their initial mix.


Ali Choudhary, State Bank of Pakistan, presented on "Management in Pakistan: Performance and conflict". Using a large data set on
management practices in manufacturing industries, Mr. Choudhary showed that areas with largest increases in terrorist activity also had
the biggest deterioration in practices.


Naveed Iftikhar, Public Policy Advisor, presented on "What drives entrepreneurship in major cities of Pakistan?".


Last session of the Conference was on Norms and Behaviour. Dr. Sanval Nasim (LUMS) and co-authors shared their fascinating study on
an issue of extreme importance to Pakistan - air quality and whether people in Lahore value air pollution forecasts.


Is it possible to counter misinformation on social media? Feedback on past behaviour of engaging with 'fake news' improves the ability of
users to identify misinformation on social media. Dr. Ayesha Ali, LUMS, presented fascinating results from her study in Pakistan.
